Ford Initiative Turns 3D Waste Into Auto Parts

The Blue Oval brand continues to go green with another eco-friendly initiative. A recent press release from the Ford Motor Company states that it has partnered with technological giant Hewlett-Packard to recycle used 3D-printed powders and parts into efficient injection-molded vehicle parts. Not only is this revolutionary on its own, but we at Portsmouth Ford want you to know that this is a first-time occurrence in the automotive industry. According to the release, the recycled parts consist of injection-molded fuel-line clips installed on the rugged Ford Super Duty® F-250. The parts have improved moisture and chemical resistance, cost about 10% less than normal, and are 7% lighter than typical components.* Ford engineers are also working on doing the same for 10 other fuel-line clips for several existing models.

Ford Opens Robotics Complex In Michigan

The Ford Motor Company has long been renowned for keeping a close eye on the future, which is why it’s completely reasonable for it to advance into the industry of robotics. A recent press release announced that the Blue Oval brand partnered with the brilliant minds at the University of Michigan to open the cutting-edge 13,400 sq.-ft. Ford Robotics Building, which the team at Portsmouth Ford is very excited about. According to the press release, the four-story complex cost a staggering $75 million and was created to “emphasize how robotics can create a more equitable society.” This will be achieved through collaboration with Ford roboticists, such as autonomous vehicle researchers, and underserved university students with an interest in the field.

Paving the Future
The press release states that classrooms with remote capabilities have already been set up within the expansive Ford Robotics Building, along with transparent glass-wall laboratories for visitors to look into while the experiments are being conducted. The Ford roboticists are housed on the building’s fourth floor, where they coordinate with University of Michigan researchers on projects involving disaster response, artificial intelligence, and even higher levels of off-road exploration capabilities. Other initiatives include advanced drone research, prosthetics, testing “legged” machines, and even self-driving automobiles!

- Proper Tire and Oil Maintenance: Your tires travel many miles to keep you safely in motion, so by ensuring correct tire pressure you can improve your fuel mileage by up to 3% according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Likewise, by bringing in your vehicle for routine oil changes, you can ensure your Ford model is working smarter, not harder. Aging, thick, or low oil essentially equates to lower fuel efficiency and leads to engine wear and tear.
- Avoid Idling and Excessive A/C: Turn off your engine when you park. The DOE reports that idling can use a quarter- to a half-gallon of fuel per hour. The future looks bright for the students of Portsmouth High School. This local high school is home to one of the top automotive programs for the Ford TechDrive program, which connects local dealerships to young people in the community. At the school’s TechDrive Kickoff Event, Portsmouth Ford made a donation to the high school’s auto mechanics program to help support students who are interested in the auto mechanics field.
With a predicted shortfall in technicians, Portsmouth Ford teamed up with Ford Motor Company to inspire students to join the auto mechanics program and eventually contribute to the automotive industry. Jeffrey Isacson, Fixed Operations Director, explained to students what Ford dealerships are looking for in future technicians.
Students learned about the pathways to becoming a technician and were able to take a close-up look at brand new Ford vehicles like the striking Ford Raptor and the sleek Ford Mustang GT. They were then presented with a 2013 Ford Fiesta, a donation that will allow students hands-on experience as a technician. Students enjoyed a catered lunch, a Ford technician shirt, and the opportunity to talk with industry professionals and ask questions about the automotive industry and the Ford TechDrive program.
